Dhaka WoMoz Day Out

WoMoz Bangladesh have been progressing really well and we thought to boast up this progress in 2015 . We had female contributors participating in Dhaka WoMoz Day Out  , not to mention quite a lot female contributor comparing to the time when it was only me and Tanha Islam. Although we have female contributors but the picture is a bit scattered. So i came up with a plan to give it a concrete shape , combining every female contributor from this region and to be more inclusive. Earlier CTG WoMoz Tech Fest created a buzz and helped us to get attention of the geeky ladies.

Formerly the event was planned for one day only but as we wanted to know our contribution areas a bit more better, we decided to have two meet-ups first and then the final Dhaka WoMoz Day Out .

On 5th July , 2014 we had our first meet-up (Dhaka WoMoz Meet-Up 001) where late Rahid Hasan , Aniruddha Adhikary and Maliha (me) had an interactive discussion on What is Womoz ,How women can contribute in Mozilla,Importance of Women in Tech,How do you engage more Women in Tech, How WoMoz Bangladesh started (Storytelling) , FOSS and why should they care.

Dhaka WoMoz Meet-Up 001 before Dhaka WoMoz Day Out

On 7th August , 2014 we had Dhaka WoMoz Meet-up 010 where we had a guided tour on developing apps for Firefox OS apps by Aniruddha Adhikary and then after lunch break intro to contribute in MDN session by Fahia Nasnin Mim.

Guided Firefox OS app development session : As it was a guided tour of app development and most of them were new, everyone build the same app . You can find a few of them here. Others are currently working on their separate project to take part in on going Firefox OS apps challenge Bangladesh organized by Telenor Digital , mozilla and MCC.

Head first to contributing in MDN session :  In this session they were given the basic ideas on localizing documents on MDN.They were assigned articles to work on by their session coordinator Fahia Nasnin Mim. They successfully accomplished each of their tasks. Details on their assigned task can be found here.

On 8th August , 2014 we had our Dhaka WoMoz Day Out finally, we had an interactive discussion on how can we be more inclusive and ensure a friendly environment for any female contributors, recruit more female FSAs , guide the new female contributors to the respective pathways and what should we do to be more constructive in coming days. The girls were split up in three groups (Team A,B,C) and brainstormed on above mentioned points. Details can be found here. The best team even got smoothies treat with extra ice-cream and cream toppings !! Yuummm !! 😀

Then after lunch break we jumped into Head First to contribute in SuMo session , our super sumo warrior womoz Nandita Roy Silvia was expected to conduct the session but as she was not available due to exam , Safwan Rahman and Rabby Hossain was kind enough to help us out. They successfully completed some assigned articles with the help of their mentors. Details can be found here.

We successfully completed our tasks and now we are looking forward to having an amazing 2015 for WoMoz Bangladesh with a bit more concentration to our goals on what we have , where we wan to see us by the end of 2015 and how we can be more constructive . Hope fully this is my last post related to WoMoz Bangladesh in 2014 😉 See you next year with some new exciting plans !! Cheers !!

An Open Letter to Mozilla Bangladesh Community

How can a volunteer define his/her love for the community? My answer would be, “ I don’t know.” But I do know one thing, “Spare the rod and spoil the child.” Now at this point, my fellow reps and “Mozilla Bangladesh leaders” might ask, “How long have you been involved with Mozilla Bangladesh to call it your child?” In polite gesture I would like to ask here, is it really necessary to be a senior contributor or superior in some manner in a certain community to love it and to contribute to it? [1]

A contributor might be a newbie in the community, (s)he might have just become a rep months ago (does (s)he even have to be a rep?) but does it mean that (s)he shouldn’t have any statement or suggestion on how the community should be operated, should their thoughts be steam-rolled over by the thoughts of “superior people”? and can’t (s)he ask questions ? or can (s)he ?

IMO, everyone is free to express their thoughts and the decisions should be taken judging each one of those thoughts, that’s what i believe in and that’s what i learned from Mozilla . I learned to value and respect contributor’s unique thoughts. I learned to be respectful of the topics and the people discussing them, even if disagreements happen with some of what is being said. Because someone formed a community, we give them credit and a certain amount of respect. But that doesn’t literally mean that they should control everything, that’s why it’s called a community- free will and participation.

That’s the beauty and speciality of open communities, everyone’s opinions are taken into count and the opinions matter.

In my social network statement (facebook) – I expressed my grief and expressed my thought on quitting over Mozilla Bangladesh Community.

I quit on my own community because –

  • I felt my decisions , my thoughts , suggestions on community issues were being steam-rolled over or rather hijacked .
  • I saw people being blind followers forgetting the community practice and supporting wrong judgement out of devotion ? Or , I don’t know may be out of being more emotional than logical , may be ?
  • I fear of seeing more favouritism in empowering volunteers  and autocratic practice in this community.
  • I have seen the cycle of empowerment of volunteers by these leaders (except few)  which IMHO is not mozillian’s way to help out and guide. Here i am criticizing idea of operating the community, not people. Please don’t misinterpret .

This problem haven’t raised over night but was brewing inside for a while . Thought it would be resolved but both team need to co-operate in order to resolve a matter . I have to admit with regret that each time i try to be open either i have received Knee-jerk contradiction or being treated as invisible Instead of being provided with reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.

Lastly I feel to be invisible in this community because neither my opinions nor my efforts to resolve  this issue are not being paid heed in last two months.

These leaders (except few) finally decided to pay heed (in my facebook statement) when i made a social statement of quitting on Mozilla Bangladesh community and that too in such a manner that is to responding to the post’s tone instead of its actual content and diverting the topic by changing it from my disagreement with autocracy to personal problems with someone from the community and blaming the whole community whereas i love my community !!

Thanks to Salman Rahman Desh ,  Md. Anisur Rahman , Shafiul Azam , Aniruddha Adhikary , my fellow womozs who cared and tried to resolve but it really doesn’t help much when you have problems at the root. I really appreciate the way the Mozilla staff and my fellow mozilla reps family members approached to me, even without knowing me personally (!) on my toughest days in my very own community.

I want to apologize for that statement in a social network ( facebook) but i needed to be heard and i was suffocating to some extent.

I want to sum it up saying , I still believe that situation can be improved in this community . I believe in mozilla’s mission and i shall continue promoting openness . I will fulfil my reps responsibilities and continue contributing , just may be with least possible dealings with community. I will surely guide my people and whoever reach out to me.

Last Piece of note for my dear community members :

(sorry for the knee jerk contradiction in this section of the blog but can’t help it . please ignore if you want.)
I may seem to be the Helen of troy to you now because you are blindfolded but i have observed and i have seen the community to be operated standing at the edge of it and that is why i ( trust me i am not alone in sensing it ) can sense what went wrong after Rahid’s demise. Please know that i have always loved my community and i have always loved you all. I will be there if you reach out to me . It’s been an honour to serve the community with you guyz beside me.

(Emma Watson’s UN Speech)

We have established localization in the heart of our contribution , to be honest i , myself am a localizer and have started contributing through localizing the webmaker UI . But even after promising , i couldn’t contribute in localizing this wonderful yet thoughtful speech of my one of the most favourite actress Emma Watson 😉 in the UN except for a few lines only as i am busy . So i forwarded the message of Larissa to my community and thanks to our awesome community lead Mahay Alam Khan , he lead and made the L10n done with the help of our awesome contributors just with in the blink of an eye.Special thanks goes to Seeam , Salman and other to get the job done . Indeed HeForShe!! 😉

The Bengali localized version of Emma Watson UN Speech is as follows –

My Polestar Rahid Hasan

I really wasn’t a genius from the very begging but a noob . I couldn’t even write blogs , actually i didn’t feel the need to write that’s why may be i never tried. One day a very friendly person with a very very bright smile asked me if i can write one to share my first ever organized womoz event’s experience with everyone and i was like , who ? me?! but i never wrote one before ! He just smiled and said , “you can write one now and soon you will be writing better blogs than mine , trust me ; GO for it ! “. I never thought that  i will be writing a blog on that person recalling his memories so soon.

I really lacked knowledge about open web let alone FOSS . He was one of the few persons who taught me everything brick by brick , starting from norms of irc , mailing lists  to mozilla mission , womoz , mozilla Bangladesh community and so on.  He would laugh on my foolish decisions (trust me i used to make many) , critic on my works , been a shield for me  ,  gave me suggestions , show me the correct path , praise me on my success , scold me when necessary  , when i got upset he would come and just be his normal laughing  and charming  self again to cheer me up . He had his confidence in me which i didn’t have and he made me realize that i can do amazing things too !

He was an ACM Student Member , an iOS developer , a treasured mentor and of course an enthusiastic and one of the senior-most Mozillians here in Bangladesh, he was apps-development task force lead of Bangladesh. Always being humble  he would always introduce himself as a mozillian . The way he contributed always amazed me and encouraged me to do more and  do better.

He was one of the pioneer to spread the mozilla Bangladesh community out of the capital city and fired up the port city Chittagong  . Chittagong mozillians have a vibrant community now.  He was both popular among the local and global community of mozillians and the incident of his demise touched every mozillians of Bangladesh community.

Rahid Hasan taught me community , mozilla Bangladesh family , valuing each  unique perspective , friendships , sharing visions , putting our differences aside to fight for a greater and better cause , mozilla reps family and so on.  I was shaken from inside on his passing away  and needed time to get a grip because i felt like getting orphan. Yes , i  still  have my fellow mozillians , brothers – sisters , awesome reps family , fellow womozs with me but he was indeed a father to me in this community and no matter whatever happens, his vacant place can never be filled.  Now i just pray to almighty so that he may grant me the blessing to carry out his teachings and i can give incredible gifts to the world.

If i am to quote about my inspiration i would definitely say ,

“Legends don’t die , they just become eternal”

Mozilla Foundation Booth@Digital World 2014

Well i’m not sure anymore which mozexperiance to estimate higher now ! Mozilla Foundation booth in Digital World 2014 (i.e. BASIS Soft Expo) was an experience of a lifetime ! But most importantly I felt proud to represent Mozilla Foundation in this expo as a mozillian.

The expo lasted from 4th June , 2014 upto 7th June , 2014 . But the preparations for the Mozilla Foundation booth started long ago. I wasn’t able to participate in the prep but yes got the opportunity to volunteer for the booth along with some awesome mozillians !

On the first day i reached the venue at 4 PM and to my utter surprise i discovered that our stall was already houseful in that exhibit hall ! I helped out my fellow mozillians with the crowd , we discussed on necessary components that are needed to be included and enlisted those in the etherpad , had a quick discussion over our activity and the whole procedure ,

Few Moments of Day # 1 From Digital World 2014 @ Mozilla Foundation Booth

calculated our mistakes and formed our information pattern that are being provided to the visitors. We were able to get developers attraction from the very first day which was really surprising. Came  across some cool geeks , developers , users , keen learners , moms , dads and who not ! We had to wrap up at 8 PM for that day.

Few Moments of Day # 2 From Digital World 2014 @ Mozilla Foundation Booth

On the second day , we displayed MaKey MaKey photo booth using web RTC and it really created a buzz –  starting from  kids to officials ! Our stall was evenly crowded for the demonstration of Firefox OS on second day as well and on top of that the  MaKey Makey  surprise ! There was such a great crowd that we had to change our plan by getting decentralized from the booth and reaching out to the visitors to attend each one of them which was our top most priority.

Few Moments of Day #3 & 4 From Digital World 2014 @ Mozilla Foundation Booth

The third and forth day had the same scenario . Crazy crowed , interest in Firefox OS , Developers gathering and what not ?! Our SuMo worriers supported them , developers helped out the geeks , we tried to aware them about  open web , maintaining web standards , data privacy , safe browsing  and lots more.

                                        Visitors’ Feedback Collection

All in all the expo went better than what we’d expected . We didn’t think that just with our bare voice and plane blue background , we would be able to catch the visitors’ attraction !!  Got tons of visitors’ feedback  and became the hottest topic of the Expo !

We were able to attract the developer society , we successfully reached to the mass feature phone user , preached web users that individuals’ security and privacy on the Internet are fundamental and must not be treated as optional, tried to articulate a vision for the Internet that users want the Mozilla Foundation to pursue and  last but not the least made Firefox OS ❤  talk of the town !

                                                      Jan Jongboom in Developer’s Con.

Our Firefox OS contributor Jan Jongboom spoke at Digital World  about Internet for all and the many opportunities that lie in Firefox OS . After his session he gave away four geeksphone peak in the audience who asked questions about Firefox OS . Wish i had asked one too !! 😉

It really was a successful attempt and the people who worked behind ( Mahay Alam Khan , Solaiman Alam , Zobayer Ahmed Khan , Salman Rahman Desh , Ashickur Rahman , Rabbi Hossain , Tapu Afrad , Shafiul Azam ChowdhurySafwan RahmanDelta Ashfaq , Belayet Hossain , OS Shubho , RIfaz , AniruddhaHerockAshkary , Wahidduzzaman Hridoy , Sunnat , Rahid Hasan )  worth a salute for this !! We were really upset that the expo ended and wished that it’d lasted a bit longer . Hope that the fox would make more noise then ever in the next BASIS Digital World 2015 😀

  See ya soon with more MozAction in next  BASIS Digital World Expo 2015  !!

CTG Womoz Tech Fest ……. A giant leap for WoMoz Bangladesh !

So far the experiences that i have gathered volunteering for mozilla , had never been so awesome . Probably what i experienced  on 23rd may , 2014 can be counted amongst the best times  i had in my life ! And why it won’t be ? We actually took one step further to aware and inspire female folks of our community to come out of the cocoon and make a difference in the statistics of FOSS and techs.

womozBDCP_1 - Copy

I thought out of the CTG WoMoz Tech Fest initiative early in February when i was an FSA and really wasn’t aware if an event like this would be possible to arrange . Details can be found here . I planned it a bit big  actually , Thinking of an National all female App day and hack day where women through out the country would participate but there was a bit dilemma as our initiative Womoz BD was very new. So we separated the plan into major divisional tech fests which was planned to be initiated with CTG Womoz Tech Fest.

The earlier date of CTG Womoz Tech Fest was finalized to be on 11th April , 2014 in association with Asian University for Women . But late on we were informed by the club leads and local mozillian community that they have exam scheduled as well as mine . details can be found here . So we were compelled to re-schedule the date on 23rd May , 2014  thinking of the local community members . But AUW remains close during the period May – August that’s why we needed to re-locate the venue to Chittagong Independent University (CIU) . CIU proposal letter detail can be found here .

~~~~~ Moments From Firefox OS app Train Session ~~~~~
After successful accomplishment of the technical sessions we provided them with some cool swags (i.e. Firefox logo t-shirts , wrist bands , webmaker  t-shirts , stickers , badges etc). All the participants were really excited and happy to receive those swags !!
On receiving cool Swags and T-Shirts !
Then with the evening snacks we concluded the whole event in the wrap up session. The impact of this tech fest is not just finished yet with this time frame but it will measurably increases women’s confidence and knowledge in open technology and culture cautioning them about their privacy in web – in an environment that more often pushes women towards the door. Also it  both empowered  young  women in our country to take up the challenge and gave them some primary idea to get started with .
Enthusiasm of the participants was praise worthy . Later on in the interactive part of the wrap up session participants expressed their thought on carrying on the open web loving trend among them .  We were able to recruited more womozes , created a womoz buzz in the region , made them aware of our path ways  and  mozilla’s mission , tools promotion.  In a word we achieved our success metrics quite well ; better then we expected actually !
~~~~~~~~  People who made it possible and worked relentlessly behind ~~~~~~~~

When I initiated the plan of  divisional tech fests leading  to all female national appathon i knew a little and wasn’t  sure if this was even possible to accomplish . Lots of uncertainties , problems and issues were there to deal with . Even at a point i got demoralized that “let it be … i can’t do this” but thanks to our community lead  Mahay Alam Khan and local reps Rahid Hasan , Ashickur Rahman Noor , Mashkawat Ahsan , Tanha Islam , Belayet Hossain , Shafiul Azam , Aniruddha Adhikary  , Ratul Minhaz  who helped me a lot through out the journey to organize such an event as a kick start . The enthusiasm and support of CTG’s local mozillians and FSAs Fahria Kabir , Nishat Rihana , Romana Momtaz ,  Rakibul Hasan , Towfique Anam Rine , Shamsuzzaman Sadi , Abdul Mannan Asif , Porag Das ,  Navid Ahsan , Raju Meaji , Shahadat Hossain Riyad , Farhana Tonni ,  Naima Sultana , Nafiul Pantha , Akramul Yeasin , Sakir Sazzad , Tanvir Chowdhury , Muslim Uddin Sumon , Roman , Sumi Khatun , Tahmina , Farzana Iqbal , Zimmeem were really praise worthy too.

At the end of the day if i am to summarize “CTG Womoz Tech Fest” then i would definitely say that CTG Womoz Tech Fest is the name of  combined effort of  dedicated mozillians of Mozilla  Bangladesh community  to make a difference rather than anyone’s personal achievement . ” WoMoz ” which’s an initiative to Mozilla is a movement to us . #CtgWomozTechFest
